Superchargers And Turbochargers: Which One To Choose?
If you want to boost your car you have a couple of options. Supercharging and turbo-charging your car will definitely add boost to your car and these options are worth considering. They both work in the same direction: they push more air into the combustion chamber which leads to more power. But the principles of their work are different.
A supercharger is powered by energy received from the engine by means of belt/pulley system. The belt puts a supercharger impeller into motion and it takes more air into the combustion chamber. Supercharger is easy to use and it can have the necessary power whenever you need it. Superchargers are also easier to maintain and they do not require special cooling features.
A supercharger produces power throughout the entire power-band. This accounts for smooth boost and easy driving. You get smooth boost both at low and high RPM?s. However, as anything else it has its disadvantages. Superchargers pull energy from the system all the time. The more power a supercharger produces the more power it takes from the engine.
A turbocharger also pushes more air into the chamber but it does it in a different way. The turbocharger impeller is driven by exhaust fumes rather than a belt/pulley system. The impeller needs sufficient exhaust fumes pressure to make the turbine spin enough. Once this is reached, the turbo starts working and it puts more air into the chamber. This consequently increases the exhaust pressure. This cycle means that the faster you go the more boost is produced by a turbocharger.
Thus, the obvious advantage of the turbocharger is that it produces great power without any extra pressure from the engine. Turbocharger has different upgrade options. For example, if you add intercoolers, the density of air will increase and thus you will get more power explosion. Moreover, there are some models that enable you to change the amount of available boost even while driving!
The disadvantage of the turbocharger is a turbo lag which means that at low RPM?s the turbocharger does not produce power. You need adequate exhaust pressure to get the system going. Once it starts, the boost produced is great. The amount of power is so great that you need to make sure that the turbocharger is properly set up so you can handle the car easily. Maintaining turbocharger is more difficult that maintaining a supercharger. Turbos have more moving parts and they require cooling down before you can shut the engine off.
I would say that superchargers are a better option for daily driving. It adds more power without making you worried about reliability of the engine and probable spinouts. But if you are a racer or a great enthusiast of sports cars, you?d rather consider installing turbochargers. You will get truly enormous amounts of power!
